Clément criticizes Zverev's game: "At Roland-Garros against Nadal in 2022, he would have lost".

Clément criticizes Zverev's game: At Roland-Garros against Nadal in 2022, he would have lost.

Beaten in all three of his Grand Slam finals, Alexander Zverev continues to chase his first major title at the age of 28.

The German, whose style of play has repeatedly failed him in the big matches, will have to find solutions for the rest of the season.

Arnaud Clément, consultant for Eurosport, was not so kind when discussing the world No. 2's chances of Grand Slam success:

"If there's no evolution in his game between now and Roland Garros, it'll be the same thing, he won't be able to win.

Well, not winning is a bit harsh, because it depends on the circumstances. If Sinner is suspended and Alcaraz injured, he may have a chance.

But if those two guys are in the draw in full possession of their resources, he has no chance of beating them. In these matches, he'll never be able to make up for his wait-and-see attitude with the quality of his serve."

The former Melbourne finalist also considers that Zverev, had it not been for his injury in the Roland Garros 2022 semi-final against Rafael Nadal, would not have been in a position to win (the score was 7-6, 6-6 in Nadal's favor) :

"Everyone says: 'He would have won if he hadn't got injured'. But no, he would have lost, I'm sure of it.

He's dominating the match, but he's not ahead in the score. Nadal knows how to do it, whereas Zverev still doesn't."

Disagree with the conclusion about the FO match against Nadal in 2022. Zverev had managed to stay in a rally with Nadal that went about 30 shots. After that rally Nadal was visibly stressed. He was not recovering like he would have in his prime. All Zverev had to do from that point on was run Nadal on as mush as possible on every point. Maybe Nadal could have taken a bathroom break or medical time out and recovered, but otherwise Zverev had him on the ropes.
