Coco Gauff Denies Serena Williams Doubles Refusal Rumors: 'It Would Be Really Cool to Play With Her'
Before Serena Williams' highly anticipated return to competition on the grass of the Queen's Club, it had been announced that she would also participate in the Berlin doubles tournament.
One question remained unanswered: who would be her partner?
Reports had suggested a possible partnership with Coco Gauff, who was said to have ultimately declined the offer. A rumor quickly denied by the 22-year-old American.
'It Would Be Really Cool to Play With Her'
Asked upon her arrival in Berlin about the rumor, Coco Gauff explained that she had never closed the door on sharing the court with Serena Williams.
"Yes, it would be really cool. I hope that one day she will play doubles alongside me. It would be really, really great.
Even if she were to return in singles, it would be amazing to share the court with her, because she is a legend and a person I admire very much. I am very happy to be in the same tournament as her again," said Gauff.
Gauff Reunites with Pegula in Berlin Doubles
Ultimately, Coco Gauff did not team up with Serena Williams, but she is indeed in the doubles draw in Berlin. She is playing alongside Jessica Pegula, a partner she knows well.
The two Americans won their first match against the pair Potapova/Shnaider (7-6, 6-4) and will play their quarterfinal against the duo Muhammad/Stollar.
