Cruz Hewitt, 17 years old: 'The Junior Grand Slams transformed me'

The name Hewitt still resonates powerfully in world tennis. And now, it's not just about nostalgia.

At 17 years old, Cruz Hewitt, son of Lleyton, was crowned 'Junior Male Athlete of the Year' by Tennis Australia, rewarding a promising season.

Indeed, this season, this right-hander measuring 1.88m played all four junior Grand Slams, an experience he describes as foundational:

'Playing these tournaments helped me enormously. The crowds, the environments, the venues... all of that contributed to improving my game and preparing me for the main tour.'

First steps among the pros: from Melbourne to Brisbane, Cruz Hewitt accelerates

Invited to the 2025 Australian Open to compete in the qualifiers, Cruz Hewitt got a taste of the very highest level against Nikoloz Basilashvili, a former Indian Wells finalist and world number 16 at his peak.

Furthermore, in November, the young Australian secured his first victory on the ATP tour, at the Brisbane Challenger, against world number 192 James McCabe (6-2, 6-1). A success that marks a turning point.

Emerson Jones, the revelation shaking up the world hierarchy

On the women's side, Emerson Jones was named Junior Female Athlete of the Year.

A former junior world number 1, the 17-year-old player has made a strong climb and now sits at world number 150.

'When I became junior number 1, I told myself it was time to move to the pros. The best juniors can already compete.'

Alex de Minaur, the record man: a fourth Newcombe Medal

The highlight of the evening, the prestigious Newcombe Medal was awarded to Alex de Minaur, for the fourth time in his career, and the third consecutive time.

A historic achievement that confirms his status as the leader of Australian tennis and a solid member of the world top 10.

'This medal is a tremendous honor. I am proud of this season and grateful to my team.'

John Newcombe himself praised his exemplary journey, highlighting constant progression and an impeccable mentality.

Hello I'm new

4j

I am surprised about relatively low attendance at Roland Garros which was the most popular slam 20+ years ago. I myself love it as well as really loving aus and us opens. I don't care about Wimbledon, sometimes maybe I can watch women's tennis. I hate Wimbledon's white dress code, I feel like I am watching junior tennis...I watched very few matches like Graf davenport final in 1999 the last time.....

It will really be befitting if he attains his 25th Grand Slam crown at the AO for he's truly the GOAT & this will stamp him & endorse his GOAT status without an iota of doubt

Almost as important to Djokovic as Slam #25--and requiring less luck--is beating Federer's total of 103 singles titles. He'll play 250s, and might even surpass Connors's 109.
