Davidovich Fokina falls… and praises Fonseca: “You will be the next Djokovic”
He had just lost a fifth ATP final, but his words left a mark. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina paid a vibrant tribute to João Fonseca, bluntly comparing him to Novak Djokovic. A rare recognition between generations.
For the fifth time in his career, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was defeated in an ATP tournament final. The Spaniard failed to open his record in Basel, beaten in two sets by the gem Joao Fonseca (6-3, 6-4).
The Spaniard, despite this new disappointment, showed class during his speech, mentioning the bright future that seems promised to Fonseca:
“You played incredible tennis today. You are the embodiment of this sport. Your future looks bright and you will probably be the next Nole, capable of beating Carlos and Jannik.”
