Ebden keeps smiling: "I can officially say I'm retiring".
Matthew Ebden had a special Saturday.
After not playing a competitive singles match for two years, the Australian found himself drafted into the main draw of the Olympic Games following Andy Murray's withdrawal.
Facing Novak Djokovic in the first round, the world number 3 doubles player lost in less than an hour (6-0, 6-1).
Beaten very badly, it was with great humor that he announced, on Intsagram, the official announcement of his singles retirement: "I can officially say that I'm retiring after this.
It was a pleasure Novak Djokovic to share the court with you for one last singles match on Philippe Chatrier here at the Olympics.
All the best for the rest of the tournament (and if it's not one of our Australians), I hope you get the gold medal."
