Ferrer after Spain's qualification to the Davis Cup semifinals: "Being present in the final stage is a gift"
As in the previous round against Denmark, Spain came from behind to secure their qualification. In the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, La Roja, deprived of world number one Carlos Alcaraz due to injury, found the physical and mental resources to overturn the Czech Republic.
After Pablo Carreño Busta's loss to Jakub Mensik, Jaume Munar dominated Jiri Lehecka, before the pair Marcel Granollers/Pedro Martinez overcame the duo of Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik in the decisive doubles match. Captain David Ferrer, who led Spain to their first semifinal in the competition since the year of their last title in 2019, is savoring the moment ahead of the match against Germany on Saturday.
"I was nervous, of course, especially when the match is so tight against a good team like the Czech Republic. I am very proud of my players, they fought and played very well. I am happy for them, we continue to dream. Being present in the final stage is a gift, we were trailing on the scoreboard and Pedro (Martinez) was the hero in Marbella (against Denmark), and again today.
He is very competitive, he is a Davis Cup player. Today, we all knew it was going to be very difficult, Pablo (Carreño Busta) played his match and was unlucky, because Mensik deserved to win. Jaume (Munar) played, in my opinion, one of his best matches on the tour.
Pedro played with one of the best doubles players in the world in Marcel (Granollers). He knows what he has to do, he was very brave on the important points. I am very happy for them, they can experience these moments. I have incredible players, that's what matters most. The atmosphere within the team is very good, which is ideal for having chances to win the Davis Cup," Ferrer thus assured for AS.
