Five New Masters 1000 Winners, a Rare Feat in the 21st Century
The ATP Tour has never seemed so open. Five players have clinched their first Masters 1000 title this season, a number that signals a changing of the guard.
While 2025 has been defined by a duel between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the Grand Slams, the Masters 1000 tournaments have had their share of surprises.
Out of the eight tournaments in this category played this year (only Paris remains at the end of the month), five players have been crowned champions for the first time. They are Jack Draper (Indian Wells), Jakub Mensik (Miami), Casper Ruud (Madrid), Ben Shelton (Toronto), and Valentin Vacherot (Shanghai).
As noted by Jeu, Set et Maths, this is the third time in the 21st century that a season has featured five new Masters 1000 winners. It happened in 2001 (Ferrero, Portas, Pavel, Haas, and Grosjean) and more recently in 2022 (Fritz, Alcaraz, Carreno Busta, Coric, and Rune).
