Fonseca reveals: "Before, in the locker room, Fritz didn't speak to me" – an unexpected friendship born at the Laver Cup
Phenomenon of the 2025 season, Joao Fonseca also made his Laver Cup debut in mid-September, rubbing shoulders with several players he had never interacted with before on the tour.
"Before, in the locker room, Fritz didn't speak to me"
In an interview for ESPN Brazil, the world number 28 admitted that this exhibition weekend allowed him to form new friendships, like with Taylor Fritz:
"I'm friends with everyone, I train with everyone. Obviously, there are players who are nicer than others and some you prefer to train with.
De Minaur and Cerundolo speak Spanish, so we ended up chatting a bit more among ourselves. But the Americans, like Opelka, who I didn't know well, became good friends.
I didn't know Fritz well either, and we became very close. Before, he was a guy who didn't greet me in the locker room, he was much shyer and didn't talk to me. But now, we chat on WhatsApp.
He congratulated me after Basel, so we talk from time to time. I didn't expect it at all, because we had never spoken before and we became very good friends."
