Taylor Fritz was reassured on Tuesday.
After a rather disjointed first round, the world number 7 rediscovered his characteristic solidity, qualifying with authority for the last 16 in Shanghai.
Up against Japan's Yosuke Watanuki, ranked 336th in the world, Fritz came through without a hitch (6-3, 6-4).
He ruled from the back of the court, hitting the ball much harder than his opponent, serving very well and distributing the play as he knows how.
Reassuringly, he will face the winner of the duel between Rune and Lehecka for a place in the quarters.
