Giorgi shares an update: "I wanted a new life because being a tennis player is demanding"
A professional tennis player until last year, Camila Giorgi decided to stop everything overnight. The Italian, who was ranked 26th in the world in 2018, won four titles on the WTA tour, including the most prestigious one at the Canadian Open in 2021, where she had surprised everyone at the time by defeating Karolina Pliskova in the final.
Now, Giorgi, 33, lives in Argentina and was recently spotted as an interviewer for the official media of the ATP tournament in Buenos Aires last month. In an interview with La Nación, Giorgi spoke about her new life and does not seem to regret her decision to leave Italy.
"I had already come many years ago to visit Buenos Aires, and I told my father that one day I wanted to travel and settle here. That dream has now come true. About five months ago, I decided to move here permanently.
Argentinians are more open and welcoming than Italians. For years, I wanted a different life because being a tennis player is very demanding. I had already gone months without playing a few times, but I always wanted to play again.
But one morning, I woke up and said, 'I've had enough, I'm quitting.' I told my father, and he was very happy. He has always supported me in everything I've done; he's an incredible person. I have many friends here, there's always something to do, often improvised, and I wasn't used to that at all. The week is always full, and I really like it. I'm happy," Giorgi assured.
