Griekspoor Reveals Hamstring Tear Forced Dubai Final Withdrawal, Will Miss Sunshine Double
Tallon Griekspoor had a very impressive week at the ATP 500 in Dubai. Already a semifinalist at this tournament last year, the Dutchman eliminated Otto Virtanen, Alexander Bublik, Jakub Mensik, and Andrey Rublev in succession.
However, the world No. 25 injured himself during his match against the Russian and was unable to compete for the final. With his withdrawal, he handed Daniil Medvedev the 23rd title of his career.
This injury will keep him off the courts for several weeks, as he went to the hospital a few hours before the final he was scheduled to play to undergo tests.
The 29-year-old player has already confirmed his withdrawal from the Sunshine Double and will therefore not be at Indian Wells and Miami. He did, however, reveal the nature of his injury to Tennis Channel during the trophy ceremony.
"When I woke up, I wasn't feeling my best"
"I spent a lot of time with the physios and doctors last night. The pain was surprisingly manageable, I thought it was less serious than feared, even though the adrenaline (from the match against Rublev) and some painkillers played a part.
I did everything I could, I had a good night's sleep. But when I woke up this morning (Saturday), I wasn't feeling my best. To be honest, I expected this.
I went to the hospital for tests that revealed a hamstring tear that I unfortunately sustained at 5-5 in the first set of yesterday's (Friday) match.
"I will do everything to recover very quickly"
So I had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the final and the tournaments that will take place in the coming weeks, which is a shame, but that's how it is. I will do everything to recover very quickly and return to the court as soon as possible.
After the match against Rublev, I wrote 'Keep trying' on the camera. No matter how I feel and what happens during the match, I always try to give myself the best chance to win. I think I did a very good job of that in the semifinals.
It's unfortunate not to have been able to take the court, I think I would have had my chances on this type of court with the form I showed throughout this week.
Nevertheless, I am very happy with the tennis I displayed all week. I will now focus on recovery to come back as soon as possible," Griekspoor elaborated.
