I'm not good at doubles, I don't do what doubles players do," says Venus Williams after her first-round win
Venus Williams won her first-round match in the doubles draw at the US Open alongside Leylah Fernandez. They faced Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez, the tournament's sixth-seeded pair.
Despite having won 14 Grand Slam titles in this event with her sister Serena, Venus stated in a press conference that she does not consider herself a good doubles player.
She said: "I always say I'm not good at doubles. No one believes me. Traditionally, doubles players focus and move in a certain way, and I don't necessarily do all of that.
I play singles, so of course, when I go out to play, I tell myself to play like I do in singles and try not to be someone I'm not.
It's something I don't feel very comfortable with in doubles, but I think there comes a point in the match when you stop thinking about it. I've never played with a partner, other than Serena, who had that mentality.
Our energy was up to the task, with unwavering determination. So it was a lot of fun, and I hope we can keep moving forward.
