In Madrid, Swiatek strolls, Jabeur finds himself
Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur booked their place in the quarter-finals in Madrid on Monday. Ironically, both members of the top 10 needed 1:08 to qualify.
As quiet as ever, Iga Swiatek didn't dawdle on the Court Manolo Santana. Faced with a Sorribes Tormo who was very confident (having beaten Svitolina and then Azarenka), the Polish player didn't mess around. Losing her first service game, the world number 1 went on to win the next twelve games to prevail (6-1, 6-0). Swiatek is now in the quarter-finals, having lost just 8 games in 3 matches. In the next round, the 22-year-old will face Beatriz Haddad Maia, who defeated Sakkari on Monday (6-4, 6-4).
For her part, Ons Jabeur is reborn on the clay courts of Madrid. After an absolutely chaotic start to the season (3 wins in 10 matches), the Tunisian has, for the first time this year, notched up three wins in a row. After two hard-fought victories in the second (against Schmiedlova 6-4, 5-7, 6-3) and third rounds (against Fernandez 7-5, 2-6, 6-4), the Madrid 2022 champion was on a roll on Monday. Up against Jelena Ostapenko (world no. 10), Jabeur used all her skill to break down an inaccurate Latvian (6-0, 6-4).
In the eighth round, Jabeur will meet the winner of the 100% American duel between Coco Gauff and Madison Keys.
