Masters 1000: Sinner Becomes First to Withdraw Twice in a Row as Defending Champion
Forced to retire against Griekspoor in Shanghai (6-7, 7-5, 3-2), Jannik Sinner becomes the first player in the ATP era to withdraw as the defending champion in multiple consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments. A tough blow for one of the tour's most beloved talents.
Jannik Sinner has just etched his name into Masters 1000 history. But this time, it's a statistic no player dreams of achieving: two consecutive withdrawals as the defending champion.
After lifting the trophies in Cincinnati in 2024, then in Shanghai in 2024, Sinner was forced to retire early in the subsequent editions of these tournaments, an unprecedented feat since the introduction of the ATP Masters 1000 format in 1990.
The timing is all the more cruel as the Turin Masters is fast approaching and the world number one ranking is at stake.
