Musetti apologizes after Beijing controversy: "The way I expressed myself was inappropriate"

During his match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in Beijing, Lorenzo Musetti sparked a media storm with controversial comments about the Chinese audience.
In recent hours, world No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti qualified for the quarterfinals of the Beijing ATP 500 tournament after a hard-fought victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (7-6, 6-7, 6-4).
However, during the match, the Italian made controversial remarks: "These fucking Chinese... they cough all the time," the player reportedly told his team. Just hours after the incident, the 23-year-old Musetti posted an apology on his social media.
"Dear Chinese fans, I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for the words I spoke yesterday out of frustration during my match. My words were directed only at a few individuals in the crowd who were constantly coughing and disrupting the game.
They were in no way aimed at the Chinese people. This happened in a moment of stress and tension during the second tie-break, but that is no excuse whatsoever.
I realize that the way I expressed myself was incorrect and inappropriate, and that it hurt many Chinese fans. I deeply regret it and feel great remorse.
I have always admired the Chinese people and sincerely appreciate playing in your country. I have been coming to China since 2018 and always feel very welcome here. I am grateful for the incredible support I constantly receive and for the many fans I have in China.
Once again, I am sincerely sorry. I deeply respect you, I feel at home here, and I appreciate the kindness you have always shown me. With respect and gratitude, Lorenzo," wrote Musetti on Instagram.
