Nadal plays it down and asks about his future: "I'm in a period of rest".

Nadal plays it down and asks about his future: I'm in a period of rest.

Rafael Nadal will not be taking part in the Laver Cup after all.

While taking part in the event created by Roger Federer in 2017 was one of his end-of-year objectives, the Spaniard has finally given up.

Clearly not ready to compete, he explained that he would prefer to leave his place to a player more capable of making Team Europe shine.

Inevitably, this decision raises questions about the end of his career. Questioned on the subject, 'Rafa' once again remained vague about his future: "Not taking part in the Laver Cup is not a tragedy.

These are decisions you sometimes make, and it was an obvious possibility.

I haven't been competing for a while and I'm convinced that there will be another player who will do better.

I'm mentally well, and I'm enjoying other things at home. There's no problem, I train every day as hard as I can.

For the moment, I'm not in a position to set myself anything.

I said I'd play until the Paris Olympics and then we'd see what happens.

Now I'm in a period of rest."
