Nine finals as world number one in a single season: Sabalenka joins a very exclusive club in the 21st century
Aryna Sabalenka has qualified for the WTA Finals for the second time in her career. The world number one defeated Amanda Anisimova (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), allowing her to play in her 9th final this season on the WTA tour.
Sabalenka confirmed her status as the world's best player at the WTA Finals. Undefeated in the group stage, the world number one defeated Anisimova this Friday in the semifinals, qualifying her for the final, her ninth this season.
After her titles in Brisbane, Miami, Madrid, and the US Open, as well as her runner-up finishes at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Stuttgart, and Roland-Garros, she will seek to win the WTA Finals for the first time in her career.
While awaiting the conclusion of this season, Sabalenka has joined a very exclusive club in the 21st century of players who have reached at least nine finals in a single WTA season while being world number one. Before her, only Martina Hingis (2000), Justine Henin (2007), and Serena Williams (2013) had achieved this feat.
