"She needed it," says Roddick after Mboko's title in Hong Kong
Struggling after winning the WTA 1000 in Montreal, Victoria Mboko won the second title of her season at the WTA 250 in Hong Kong in early November.
Mboko was one of the big revelations of the season. The 19-year-old Canadian won the WTA 1000 in Montreal at home after her victory against Naomi Osaka. But after that, she went through a difficult period with four consecutive defeats, all without winning a single set, before the end of the Asian tour.
A quarter-finalist in Tokyo, she then triumphed at the Hong Kong tournament against Cristina Bucsa. A title that is welcome to regain confidence for next year, according to Andy Roddick.
"Victoria Mboko had a breakthrough win in Canada at the WTA 1000 in Montreal. It's a huge event, but she then seemed to struggle a little bit for the first time this year.
She won 60 matches this year between the WTA tour and the secondary tour. But she then finished strong. I think she needed it. Her season kind of went downhill after Canada. I think there were a few injuries.
It's a really good way for her to right the ship and finish the year on a high note, beating Bucsa in the final and her compatriot Leylah Fernandez in the semi-finals, which is always important when you're playing maybe the best player from your own country," he stated for Tennis Up To Date.
