At the end of a high-flying duel, Ben Shelton managed to dominate an inexhaustible Stan Wawrinka in a fiery atmosphere (7-6, 7-5) in Basel.
Smiling after his success, the American even took the liberty of gently teasing his opponent: "We were both joking in the dressing room before the match that he'd been on tour as long as I've been alive.
He's got a lot of experience and he's a much-loved champion around the world. He's done incredible things for our sport.
The support from the fans today is proof of that... I had to smile at times today because it's obviously against me.
It's so cool to see a country and a tournament supporting a guy like him, who has been such an icon. I salute Stan.
I don't think I'll be winning any more matches at 39."
