Monfils and Tsonga on their Grand Slam failures: "Wawrinka, Cilic and Del Potro were stronger than us"
In a talk-show between Gaël Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the two men discussed their failures in major tournaments and admitted that they hadn't been good enough to win any.
Despite having carried France's expectations for many years, Tsonga and Monfils, along with Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon, were among the players who failed to win a Grand Slam when the Big 4 experienced its rare slumps.
Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin Del Potro are the three players who managed to win a Grand Slam when the Big 4 were active on the circuit.
In this talk show, which can be viewed on YouTube, Monfils agreed with Tsonga that he had failed to reach the level of his peers: "I don't mind saying that these three (Wawrinka, Cilic, Del Potro) were stronger than us.
They won their Grand Slams with legends of the sport.
Stan was in an exceptional state of grace the years he won his Grand Slams. He played incredible tennis.
Cilic, incredible tennis when he won (US Open 2014), he had that thing.
Del Potro, same thing, and on top of that he was losing the US Open final before finally winning it."
