Sinner: "Djokovic's reaction was great to see".
Even though he was unable to take part in the Olympic Games (victim of a severe sore throat), his main objective for the season, Jannik Sinner didn't shy away from the event. Already in Montreal (August 06-12) to prepare for his return to competition, the world No.1 followed the tournament on TV, and in particular the second part of the battle between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
Impressed by the level of play in the final, the Italian was also moved by Djokovic's reaction, overwhelmed by emotion after his victory, and by Alcaraz's distress, in tears at the time of the post-match interview.
Jannik Sinner: "I watched a bit (of the Olympic final between Alcaraz and Djokovic) because at first I was at training. When I came back, I watched the whole second set. It was a very high-level match. I think everyone agrees with that. It was a very physical match.
And you know, when two of the best players in the world play against each other, they produce something very special. So it was a pleasure to witness this kind of match. And I think all of us really enjoyed it.
You know, this kind of level, you don't see it every day. So, yes, it was an extraordinary match. [...]
Of course I understand (Djokovic's reaction and emotion after his victory). But I think he understands it better than anyone. He put in so much effort to get this medal, which was the last thing he really needed to achieve.
And he knew it in his mind. He's been close several times, getting bronze, fourth place... And this year was his year.
Yes, it was a very nice scene to see how much it meant to him and also Carlos' reaction afterwards. It's the same reaction, but the other way round.
You know, you work for things like that and then you succeed. So obviously, Novak has had many, many years of waiting. It's very nice to see."
