"Thank you to my team for suffering with me this week," Fernandez's first words after winning the Osaka tournament
Leylah Fernandez has won the fifth title of her career at the WTA 250 in Osaka.
Fernandez wrapped up her week in Osaka in the best possible way. Seeded fourth in Japan, the Canadian dominated the young Czech player Tereza Valentova (6-0, 5-7, 6-3) to claim the fifth title of her career on the main tour, and her second this season after Washington. The 23-year-old player reacted on court to this title during the trophy ceremony.
"I would like to congratulate Tereza (Valentova), you played incredible tennis. This has been a fantastic week for you, your coach, and your family. I am certain we will see you in many more finals like this one.
Thank you to the spectators for coming to support us throughout the week. Not just me, but all the players who participated in this tournament. Without you, we wouldn't be here. Thank you for supporting us, motivating us, and giving us that positive energy.
Finally, I would like to thank my team. My father who is in the stands and is also my coach, my training partner Federico... Thank you for suffering with me this week, last month, all season long.
Thank you to my family and loved ones who are at home. Without all your sacrifices and support, I wouldn't be here today. Thank you so much for all the love and motivation you give me," Fernandez stated according to remarks collected by The Tennis Letter.
