The offer is saturated": Becker's rant about the calendar and the creation of a new Masters 1000
Regarding the arrival of the Masters 1000 in Saudi Arabia, Boris Becker gave an unfiltered speech. According to him, an overflow of tennis threatens public interest and the clarity of the tour. A strong message at a time when the debate on the calendar is heating up.
In 2028, the ATP will add a tenth Masters 1000 to its calendar, to be held in Saudi Arabia. A new major tournament in a season that already has its share of important events, in addition to the numerous criticisms from players regarding the density of the calendar and the problems related to Masters 1000 events being played over twelve days.
In an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, the German champion Boris Becker was asked about the addition of this new tournament and the resulting problem:
"There are a lot of tournaments, that's for sure. In the end, it's up to the players to decide how many weeks in a row they want to play. But for the fans, it's difficult to follow tennis every week, there can be confusion.
Sometimes, two tournaments take place at the same time, and, especially at the end of the season, when everyone is trying to qualify for the ATP Finals, the situation gets complicated.
I think there is too much tennis. The public should be a little hungry for tennis: if there is some every week, the offer is saturated. For the players, it allows them to work non-stop, but for the fans and the media, it's perhaps too much.
