The United States get their Davis Cup campaign off to a perfect start!
Contract fulfilled for the American Davis Cup team on Wednesday.
Against a valiant Chilean side, they avoided the trap with great mastery, handling the important moments with great authority.
However, the matchup was not necessarily in their favor.
Deprived of most of their stars, they were able to count on an inexhaustible Opelka and a heroic Nakishima.
In a match of returnees, Reilly Opelka dominated Cristian Garin after a tense tie-break in the last set (6-3, 4-6, 7-6).
Shortly afterwards, Brandon Nakshima came out on top against Alejandro Tabilo, who was ranked much higher than him (22nd vs. 40th).
The 23-year-old had to battle hard throughout the match, but showed impressive resilience to win the first and last sets in a tie-break.
A hard-fought winner (7-6, 2-6, 7-6), Nakashima gave his nation its first major victory.
The icing on the cake was Krajicek and Ram's third point, again in the tie-break of the final set (4-6, 6-4, 7-6).
Relentlessly efficient, Team USA won 3-0 and put an end to Chile's hopes of qualification.
Next up for Nakashima and his team on Thursday is a duel against the tournament's minnows: Slovakia.
