United Cup: Swiatek topples Boulter and sends Poland into the last four
After Hubert Hurkacz's 7-6, 7-5 win over Billy Harris, Poland were in a strong position to reach the semi-finals of the United Cup 2025.
The defending finalists can count on Iga Swiatek, who has been impeccable since the start of the competition.
After a first test against Karolina Muchova and the Czech Republic, the current world number 2 was aiming to confirm her form against Katie Boulter and Great Britain.
Despite taking a break in the first set, Swiatek saw Boulter come back and even win the first set in the tie-break (7 points to 4).
The five-time Grand Slam winner's reaction was swift, however, and she quickly rediscovered her form to level the score at one set apiece.
At the start of the deciding set, Boulter took her opponent's serve first, but after a medical time-out used by Swiatek at the time, the Pole broke white immediately.
In the end, after a three-hour battle, it was Iga Swiatek who came out on top.
She won her third singles match of the season and sent her country through to the semi-finals of the competition (6-7, 6-1, 6-4). Great Britain, on the other hand, was eliminated.
For the first time since the start of the competition, Poland did not need a decisive mixed doubles to seal the fate of a match, and will now face Kazakhstan in the semi-finals for a second consecutive final.
The match between Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina promises to be spectacular.
