US Open: Muchova Pushed by Kostyuk, Anisimova Eases Past Haddad Maia

The final round of 16 matches in the women's draw of the US Open took place last night.

Closing out the schedule on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Anisimova made quick work of Brazil's Haddad Maia (6-0, 6-3) in just over an hour of play.

The American confirmed her status (No. 8 seed) and secured her fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal, her first at Flushing Meadows. Having qualified, she will now face Swiatek in the quarterfinals for a rematch after her straight-set 6-0, 6-0 loss in the Wimbledon final last July.

Meanwhile, Muchova faced Kostyuk in the only match scheduled on the Grandstand. Despite strong aggression from the Ukrainian (44 winners) and excellent serving form (81% of points won behind the first serve), she faltered at crucial moments, lacking efficiency (1/10 break points converted).

The Czech player, on the other hand, managed to convert the few break opportunities she created in each set (4/5 throughout the match). Hindered by back pain toward the end of the second set, she battled hard to overcome her opponent, the world No. 28.

As the No. 11 seed, she continues her momentum to reach the quarterfinals in New York once again (she is coming off two consecutive semifinal appearances).

Victorious after 2 hours and 53 minutes of play (6-3, 6-7, 6-3), Muchova will have another tough challenge ahead against Osaka. Especially since the American is coming off a win against world No. 3 and 2023 champion here, Gauff (6-3, 6-2).
