US Open: Tournament Direction Entrusted to Former Player Eric Butorac
With 18 doubles titles and extensive experience within the USTA, Eric Butorac is taking on one of the most strategic positions in world tennis. An emotionally charged appointment that could shape the future of the New York Grand Slam.
The US Open has its new director. The USTA has announced that Eric Butorac, a former professional player, will take over from Stacey Allaster, who left her position last September after five years at the helm of the tournament.
Butorac, aged 44, has been working with the United States Tennis Association since 2016. A true doubles specialist, the native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, won 18 titles in the discipline and reached a career-high world ranking of No. 17.
He also served on the ATP Player Council from 2008 to 2016, even taking on the role of President in 2014, succeeding Roger Federer at the time.
"I am incredibly excited and grateful to be taking on the role of US Open Tournament Director. In many ways, this is a dream come true and the culmination of my entire life and career in tennis.
I am honored not only by this opportunity, but also to be succeeding one of my greatest mentors, Stacey Allaster. [...] I look forward to contributing to the continued growth and success of the US Open for years to come," Butorac stated regarding his appointment.
Behind the scenes, Butorac was one of the driving forces behind the new mixed doubles competition created during the last edition of the US Open, working closely with Stacey Allaster on the project. He had even been appointed as its director.
