Zheng confirms her Olympic title in the middle of the night in New York
Zheng Qinwen qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open on Sunday. This Sunday, or rather this Monday morning, as her superb battle with Donna Vekic only came to an end at 2:15 a.m., after almost 3 hours of play (7-6, 4-6, 6-2).
It was a rematch of the Olympic Games final in which the Chinese player had already dominated the Croatian on the clay of Roland-Garros in early August (6-2, 6-3). The match was much closer on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, but the outcome was ultimately the same.
Zheng thus confirms her current excellent form, and will have the opportunity to further prove that she has turned the corner in the next round. She will face Aryna Sabalenka, who beat her at the same stage of the competition last year. Things could well turn out differently this year.
