This is a bad joke, and they never dared to make such joke with e.g. Federer or Nadal. This is the same level of bad humor as joking with Jews about WWII. At least if he had said "I am just joking" or some smile; but no. He was serious.

If you "tried to be funny" and that ended up as an offence, then, at list the "sorry, I didn't meant..." would be appropriate. But, I don't agree that he was "trying to be funny"!
