Young players need mentors to tell help them stay grounded. Parents and other wise family members and friends, coaches and trainers, older players and such. They need to be told how to keep things in perspective, how fickle fans can be, the pros and cons of social media and how to manage it, how gambling has tainted sports, etc. Older players need to tell teach them how it's normal to get caught up in the fray. And of course to teach them to be reflective. Too look back on their already short life, how they reacted to things in the past that now seem relatively minor compared to the feelings at the time they happened. "I've dealt with many problems in my life, most of which never existed." - Samuel Clemens

Well the players and the coaches have a reputation to uphold. A reputation in a world that makes a difference concerning substantial amounts money. A player or coach doesn't want to talk badly about the other because that will help determine if another wants to take the place of the former in the individuals career. And there are PR agents who try to airbrush the fans and public's opinion and contracts with sponsors that dictate what kinds of behavior are acceptable.
We're never getting the truly honest opinion of any of these people unless that opinion is 100% positive.
