According to Live Tennis News....

"Johnson did not say that del Potro should not get a wildcard, but he did say in Cincinnati that American fans might not like it if del Potro got a wildcard and beat an American."

Steve just doesn't want to be that American. This is gonna be an epic match for both.

As a proud American, I don't mind at all if delPo defeats any American.
I got the best seats in my house ready for this match.

i read the original interview. SJ said it wasn't a good idea for the USO organizers to give delpo a wild card b/c if he beats an american player then alot of american fans might be upset. what gives stevie the right to speak on behalf of american fans? i'm from USA & he doesn't speak for me.
