They're calculated by points accumulated, normally over the last 12 months, but extended a bit due to the shortened season in 2020. The tournaments are weighted: so winning a GS is 2,000 points, the WTA finals are 1500, the WTA 1000 tournaments are 1,000 or 900 the 500s are 470 and 250s are 280 (yeah, I have no idea why they change those numbers so slightly). For Brady to be seeded 15, she must have won more points than all but the 14 above her in that time period... The only time this system fails, is when some players play less tournaments and become underranked (the Williams's sisters being a notorious example)...
