Swiatek Channels Bublik with Racket Throw at United Cup – Point Ruled Illegal
Iga Świątek had no trouble beating Suzan Lamens at the United Cup, winning 6-3, 6-2. The match was nevertheless marked by a moment as spectacular as it was unusual.
On a perfectly placed drop shot by Lamens, seemingly out of reach, Świątek attempted a desperate play. At full stretch, she released her racket toward the ball, which miraculously cleared the net before landing in the opponent's court, stunning the crowd.
An 'illegal' shot
Unfortunately for the Pole, the umpire did not validate the shot. And for good reason: the rules require the player to hold the racket in hand at the moment of impact.
Additionally, Świątek's racket touched the net, another rules violation. Point disallowed, then, but it remains one of the most astonishing sequences in a match dominated by the Polish champion.
