Big controversy over match point between Draper and Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati

Big controversy over match point between Draper and Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati

Here's a point that's still causing a stir in the tennis world. Felix Auger-Aliassime was the victim of a major error by the chair umpire on the match point that gave Jack Draper victory in the 3rd round of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 on Friday. The British player first hit the ball, which then bounced off the ground to his side before crossing the net.

But the chair umpire validated the point and announced "Game, set and match" for Draper, prompting Auger-Aliassime's incomprehension (see video below). The Canadian argued and asked the tournament supervisor to intervene, but the decision remained unchanged and he was forced to accept defeat.

Auger-Aliassime (to the chair umpire): "Didn't you see the ball bounce off the ground? On the floor. After he hit it?

Chair umpire: "What do you mean? I didn't see it. The ball hit the ground? I didn't see that. I saw it go out of the frame and over the net.

Auger-Aliassime: "You're going to leave the court now and the images will be broadcast everywhere. And it's going to be ridiculous. I'm not kidding. It's going to be ridiculous.
It's going to be crazy. And I know it's not his (Draper's) decision to make.
Victory is his. But it's your decision to make. I don't expect you to make it anymore."

Chair umpire should be fired from this tournament for disrespect shown to player.. They not hesitate to disqualify Djokovic after he fired the ball at dummy line judge who should not be there at all in times of C19 era.. It supposed to work in both ways.

Disgraceful conduct by the umpire. The umpire should be punished for this mistake. It happened right under his nose . There has to be some way for Felix to get compensation

Draper knows how it went, don't tell me he has no clue, maybe the Ref screwed up, but Draper should've admitted it 👎

I think it is idiotic to say that a linesman or an empire should be fired for making a mistake, that is ridiculous. Tennis needs to get with the times and start having video playback for issues like this.

@Fred this is a pretty bad mistake though and it happened right in front of the chair. I agree with Felix, I don’t know how the umpire didn’t see that. I also agree with Felix when he tells Jack that Jack should’ve known…he’s right, when you play enough especially at a high level you know where your shots go

@Fred At least Draper offered to replay the point immediately, and another time later. However that wasn't enough. He should have conceded the point.

Only Jack knows if he knew or not, but its not his call to make. In a close match at such a decisive point you have to take what you can get

Just saw the replay, horrific from both Jack and the chair umpire... No excuses.

chair umpires are getting too obnoxious with their decision making nowadays

What controversy? Draper clearly lost the point and should have acknowledged this fact.

Hello I'm new

4j

I am surprised about relatively low attendance at Roland Garros which was the most popular slam 20+ years ago. I myself love it as well as really loving aus and us opens. I don't care about Wimbledon, sometimes maybe I can watch women's tennis. I hate Wimbledon's white dress code, I feel like I am watching junior tennis...I watched very few matches like Graf davenport final in 1999 the last time.....

It will really be befitting if he attains his 25th Grand Slam crown at the AO for he's truly the GOAT & this will stamp him & endorse his GOAT status without an iota of doubt

Almost as important to Djokovic as Slam #25--and requiring less luck--is beating Federer's total of 103 singles titles. He'll play 250s, and might even surpass Connors's 109.
