Former coach of Rafael Nadal (2017-2024), Carlos Moya spoke in an episode of 'Llamada a Pista' from the Spanish media outlet Punto de Break.

The former world No. 1 and 1998 Roland Garros champion reflected on the mentality of Carlos Alcaraz, who has already spoken, notably in his Netflix documentary, about his need to regularly step away from tennis.

He emphasizes the importance of doing other things, like going out with friends at night, to live a 'normal' life.

'Being happy is already a huge success,' he said.

Moya Defends Alcaraz's Vision

On this matter, Carlos Moya fully shares the young Spaniard's viewpoint, as he explains:

'When I hear everything Alcaraz says, I completely agree. I perfectly understand that he has other interests outside of tennis.

Even if he retired right now, he would already be one of the greatest of all time, and he's only 23. Let him live and enjoy life.'

I would say becoming filthy rich when you're very young probably has a huge influence on a person's lifestyle. All world class athletes are obviously gifted/blessed with incredible raw athletic talent, but that doesn't mean they're also gifted/blessed with the type of temperament that's going to drive them to exploit the former to it's maximum potential. Alcaraz seems to have learned early how to manage his temperament along side his incredible athletic gifts. Otherwise he might turn into a mental case like some other athletes have done and never come close to his potential.
