Wimbledon Snubs Monfils, Kyrgios, Evans; Awards Final Wild Cards to Unknown Brits
In a surprise move, Wimbledon gives its last two wild cards to little-known Britons Harry Wendelken and Felix Gill, bypassing high-profile candidates.
After a day of waiting, Wimbledon has revealed the final two wild cards for the men's singles draw.
While Gaël Monfils, Nick Kyrgios, and Daniel Evans (who will retire after the tournament) were among the most mentioned names, the organizers made a very different choice.
Two British wild cards
The final two invitations were awarded to Britons Harry Wendelken (world No. 224) and Felix Gill (No. 222), two 24-year-old players still largely unknown to the general public.
This is a major blow for Dan Evans, who had already sharply criticized the Queen's Club organizers for denying him a wild card, while Nick Kyrgios, a singles finalist four years ago, will have to settle for doubles alongside Alexander Bublik.
Finally, Monfils, whose best Wimbledon result remains a fourth-round appearance in 2018, will have to either go through qualifying or skip the year's third Grand Slam altogether.
