Rusedski: 'I Don't Think Alcaraz Will Be Ready for Wimbledon' – Injury Concerns Mount
Carlos Alcaraz has missed Barcelona and more with a wrist injury; Greg Rusedski is pessimistic about a return before Wimbledon.
Greg Rusedski is a regular observer of the ATP and WTA tours.
Highly successful in the late 1990s and a finalist at the US Open in 1997, the Brit has now weighed in on the case of Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.
Absent from the courts since the Barcelona tournament due to a serious wrist injury, the 23-year-old player prefers to take his time to avoid rushing his return.
While many medical experts have spoken on the subject, some believe a return as early as Wimbledon would be too risky.
A view shared by Greg Rusedski, as he explained in an interview relayed by Punto de Break.
« We have lost a great player for long periods. As long as Alcaraz is not ready, he will not come back. I don't think he will be ready for Wimbledon this year. »
A situation that could benefit Djokovic?
According to the consultant, this absence, as regrettable as it is for fans, could benefit one player in particular: Novak Djokovic.
« I think Djokovic sees this as an opportunity. That's where he wants to reach his best level. He will want to be physically ready and accumulate rhythm, perhaps by playing a few grass-court tournaments before arriving at Wimbledon.
Never underestimate him. If he is in shape and healthy, he can beat anyone. That is still the case. But you can feel that important moments are coming in the next few weeks. »
