"I'm going to have to figure out what happened," Swiatek reacts to her elimination in the group stage of the WTA Finals

I'm going to have to figure out what happened, Swiatek reacts to her elimination in the group stage of the WTA Finals

For the second consecutive season, Iga Swiatek has been eliminated in the group stage of the WTA Finals. The Polish player, who was competing in a decisive match for qualification, was defeated by Amanda Anisimova.

Since her title at the Masters two years ago, Swiatek has had a complicated love affair with this tournament. Eliminated after the group stage last year, the world number 2, who managed to build momentum throughout the season, has once again left the WTA Finals before the semi-finals.

In a decisive encounter, this year's Wimbledon champion was beaten by Anisimova (6-7, 6-4, 6-2). A disappointed and somewhat stunned Swiatek reacted in the mixed zone after her elimination, which she is struggling to understand.

"Honestly, I gave everything I had today, so I have no regrets. I felt I was really in the match, I had a positive mindset. Maybe some of my shots were too short, but in tennis, nothing ever goes perfectly.

I fought, I didn't give up. It wasn't enough, and that makes me sad. I'm going to have to figure out what happened, because when you give your all but it's not enough, it means your tennis needs to be even better.

I felt good physically, mentally, and tennis-wise. I don't really understand why I didn't manage to get through the group stage, it's difficult for me to explain. It's not like I was expecting this.

From what I know from my previous personal experiences, I know that, generally, if I put in a lot of intensity and courage and I'm focused, it pays off very often," Swiatek thus stated to AFP.
