Lorenzo needed to win the ATP 250 tournament in Athens to secure his ticket for the Masters.
But in an ironic twist: despite the Italian's defeat (4-6, 6-3, 7-5), it was his opponent in the final, Novak Djokovic, who, by withdrawing from Turin, allows him to join the prestigious list of eight champions. He commented on this news during a press conference in Greece.
"Novak told me on the court that he wouldn't go to Turin. I'm not really sure how to feel right now, after losing in the final. It's good that the 'Race' for Turin will end after the Paris Masters 1000 next year."
Indeed, the ATP announced a few days ago a change regarding the calculation of the Race points, which will end after the final of the Paris tournament starting in 2026.
