Video - Sonego's magnificent volley against Shelton
On Rod Laver Arena, the first quarter-final of the day in the men's draw pits Ben Shelton against Lorenzo Sonego.
The American is aiming for a second Grand Slam semi-final, while the Italian is a novice at this stage of the competition.
But that didn't stop 29-year-old Sonego from giving it his all. In the first set, the winner of Wawrinka, Fonseca, Marozsan and Tien produced a point that will go down as one of the finest of the tournament.
Having to save a break point in the very first game of the second set, Sonego went on the offensive and his risks paid off.
On his way to the net, he produced a plunging backhand volley that bounced back into Shelton's court before returning to his own court. A winning shot that was as improbable as it was magnificent, and was duly applauded by the spectators.
