ATP Vienna: In Pain, Medvedev Wins and Joins Moutet in the Second Round

Daniil Medvedev, in the running to qualify for the prestigious ATP Finals, pulled off a hard-fought victory against Nuno Borges in Vienna.

Far from a mere formality, this duel was a real battle. Borges, ranked 47th in the world, severely troubled the former world number one.

Despite narrowly losing the first set, the Portuguese player did not collapse in the following set. On the contrary, he pushed it to a tie-break, saving two match points along the way and winning it 9-7.

In the third and final set, Medvedev raised his level. Game after game, he stifled Borges, also taking advantage of his lack of efficiency throughout the match (0/4 break points).

Result: victory for the Russian 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 after 2 hours and 18 minutes of play and a qualification for the second round where he will meet Corentin Moutet, a player he knows well.

Indeed, the two men have faced each other three times on the tour, including twice this season: Moutet's victory in the Washington quarterfinals (1-6, 6-4, 6-4), followed by Medvedev's victory in the Almaty final (7-5, 6-7, 6-2).
