Verdasco officially retired after doubles defeat with Djokovic in Doha

At the age of 41, Fernando Verdasco put an end this Wednesday to a professional career spanning more than twenty years on the ATP circuit.

Paired in doubles with Novak Djokovic in Doha, the two men lost in the 2nd round of the tournament to specialists Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten (7-5, 6-4), recent winners of the Australian Open.

Following this defeat, the Spaniard officially retired from the world of professional tennis, leaving behind a storied career that included seven ATP titles, three Davis Cups, two US Open quarter-finals (2009 and 2010), a Wimbledon quarter-final (2013) and a memorable semi-final against Rafael Nadal at the 2009 Australian Open.

A few weeks after this result, the Madrid native achieved a career-high ranking of 7th in the world. He also played in the ATP Finals during the 2009 season.
