A victorious return to the WTA for Bencic
Belinda Bencic won her first match on the WTA Tour in over a year, beating Patricia Maria Tig (6-4, 6-1) at the Angers tournament.
The Swiss player had returned to competition in early November, but this was her first tournament on the main circuit since announcing her pregnancy in November 2023.
Bencic, who is now ranked over 900th in the world, received an invitation from the organizers to play in Angers this week.
In her first round match against Tig, she was not broken all match (four break points saved) and posted some interesting statistics on her serve (78% of points won behind her first ball).
And it was with a pretty return that she concluded the match (see video below).
In the 2nd round, Bencic will face Mariam Bolkvadze or Anastasia Zakharova in a fairly open draw.
