The six WTA Tour players to have won at least fifty matches at the Australian Open

The Australian Open kicks off on Sunday, and it's time to take a look back at the tournament's history books.

In the history of the competition, six players have managed to reach the symbolic mark of fifty matches won.

We start this Top 6 with Victoria Azarenka, who has now won fifty matches in Melbourne in 16 appearances between 2006 and 2024.

This longevity for the Belarusian will continue this year, as she will be seeded n°19 for the 2025 edition.

Twice crowned champion in 2012 and 2013, she also lost in the semi-finals in 2023 and three times in the quarter-finals (2010, 2014, 2016).

Ahead of her is Martina Hingis, who has won 52 matches and lost 7 in just ten appearances. The Swiss player had managed the feat of a hat-trick of titles (1997, 1998, 1999) before losing three finals in a row (2000, 2001, 2002).

So it's with a well-rounded record in Melbourne that she takes fifth place in this ranking.

At the foot of the podium, we find Venus Williams, who, it's important to mention, has still not officially retired. In 21 appearances between 1998 and 2021, the American won 54 matches and lost 21.

She has never won this Grand Slam, beaten twice in 2003 and 2017 by her sister Serena.

Lindsay Davenport occupies third place in this ranking with 56 matches won and 13 lost in 14 appearances.

She triumphed in Melbourne in 2000, reached the final in 2005 and lost three times in the last four (1998, 1999, 2001).

In second place, Maria Sharapova has a record of 57 wins and 15 losses from 16 Australian Open appearances.

Sharapova lifted the trophy in 2008 and has lost in the final three times (2007, 2012, 2015). She was also a semi-finalist in 2002, 2003 and 2013.

Last but not least, it's no surprise that Serena Williams tops the list, well ahead of the other players: 92 matches won and 13 lost in 20 appearances between 1998 and 2021.

The American legend had an insolent success rate in Melbourne, winning seven titles (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017) in eight finals played.

In 2016, Angelique Kerber managed to spring a surprise by beating her in three sets in the final.

In her last appearance in 2021, S.Williams reached the semi-finals, where she was beaten by future winner Naomi Osaka.
