"I'm not where I want to be right now," regrets Sakkari

I'm not where I want to be right now, regrets Sakkari

Maria Sakkari concluded her 2025 season with a first-round loss at the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo against Leylah Fernandez.

Sakkari fell in two sets against Fernandez in the first round in Tokyo. After successfully navigating the qualifying rounds, the Greek player had the match in her hands against the Canadian, leading 5-2 in the first set and then 4-2 in the second.

Ultimately, Fernandez won in two tight sets (7-6, 6-4). Following the match, which also marks the end of her 2025 season, the world No. 54 posted a message on her Instagram account after receiving insulting messages (see post below).

"I'm not used to doing this, but I just wanted to write a few words. There isn't much to say about the messages I received after my match. Every tennis player receives them almost every day.

What I wanted to say is that it has been a tough season, well below my own expectations. It's not easy to accept after competing at the highest level for several years, but I'm not where I want to be right now.

I am grateful to all the people around me and my fans who continue to believe in me. It wasn't the season I hoped for, but good things will come.

And to all the people who doubt me, my goal is not to prove you wrong, but to prove myself right. See you in 2026," Sakkari wrote on the social network in recent hours.
