431 double faults: Coco Gauff's staggering number in 2025
Coco Gauff had a season with several successes: champion at Roland-Garros, winner in Wuhan, finalist in Madrid and Rome, and a 3rd place world ranking to conclude 2025.
But behind this sporting success hides a statistic that stands out as a blemish.
For the second consecutive year, Gauff finishes as the WTA number 1 in double faults… and by a wide margin. She is the only player to cross the 400 mark, with 431 double faults, while her runner-up Ekaterina Alexandrova tops out at 300.
Last year, she had already surprised by reaching 430 double faults: a total that seemed impossible to surpass. Yet she has just done it.
In August, on the eve of the US Open, Gauff therefore parted ways with Matt Daly to entrust her serve to biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan, known for transforming struggling servers.
The work with MacMillan showed promising developments: more speed, more balance, a less forced mechanics. But at the end of the season, under pressure, Gauff's serve and forehand wavered again, costing her dearly in the last big matches.
And the comparison with the rest of the top 10 is striking:
- Anisimova (260)
- Swiatek (235)
- Andreeva (224)
- Rybakina (222)
Finally, if MacMillan has already resurrected Sabalenka, can he elevate Gauff? The 2026 season might just provide the answer.
