5 American Players Reach the Third Round of Roland-Garros: A First in the 21st Century
Clay courts aren’t necessarily the favorite surface for American players. Yet, in this 2025 edition, five American players have made it to the third round of Roland-Garros: Ethan Quinn, Tommy Paul, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, and Sebastian Korda.
This is the first time in the 21st century that so many American players have advanced to this stage of the competition, with the last occurrence dating back to 1996.
Notably, a showdown between Tiafoe and Korda guarantees that the U.S. will have at least one American player in the round of 16.
