A disappointing Humbert walks out in the first round at Roland Garros!
The first round was a source of concern for the entire French camp. Ugo Humbert, who had been lacking confidence for several weeks, had inherited a tricky draw, as he had to face one of his pet peeves: Lorenzo Sonego (50th).
In one of the first clashes of the tournament, the French number 1 disappointed, beaten by Sonego in 4 sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in 2h49). Humbert's match was very shaky, with too many errors to hope for anything (25 winners, 38 unforced errors). Once again, the Parisian adventure comes to an end much sooner than expected for the man who had thought he'd be in the running for the end-of-year Masters at the start of the season.
On the other side of the court, Lorenzo Sonego didn't miss a beat. He came onto the court with clear offensive intentions and showed his mastery of the surface to dispose of an opponent who was still too inconsistent on clay. Having already beaten Humbert in 2023, the Italian once again spoiled the party and booked his place in the second round.
The outgoing eighth-finalist will attempt to reach the third round on Wednesday, when he faces Zhizhen Zhang, who defeated Vukic (6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5).
