"A surreal experience", Swiatek looks back on the Wimbledon final against Anisimova

Iga Swiatek won Wimbledon for the first time in her career this year. The Pole did not drop a single game in the final against Amanda Anisimova, and has reflected on the scenario of that final.

This season, Iga Swiatek revived her season at Wimbledon. During a difficult period at that time, the world number 2 had then delivered an excellent run on the London grass. The final against Amanda Anisimova promised to be close, but the American, completely overwhelmed by the stakes, completely missed her match and did not win a single game in her first Grand Slam final.

"I didn't want to give away points for free"

An unexpected scenario that left the spectators on Centre Court at Wimbledon wanting more. Asked in recent hours about the July final, the six-time Grand Slam champion, aged 24, stated that she did not pay attention to what was happening on the other side of the net and that she simply wanted to play the best match possible to win.

"I would choose without hesitation any season that would have allowed me to win Wimbledon. I am extremely proud of this achievement. I did not expect it to happen this year. I thought I would need a few more years to learn how to play on grass and adapt my game to this surface.

But I felt in great shape. We worked hard before Wimbledon to change some tactics that I had in mind and that I wasn't really using in previous years. Day after day, I felt that I had found my game and I really seized this opportunity. This victory changed everything.

I wasn't really thinking about the image that winning the final in this way would leave, I was just playing and I didn't want to give away points for free. It was the Wimbledon final, I really wanted to win. Afterwards, of course, there were a lot of crazy things.

"I was also extremely stressed"

I remember all those interviews about the score, journalists asking me if I should let Amanda (Anisimova) win a game or something like that. I can only say that this tournament shows that tennis is a mental sport. This aspect of the game has a huge impact on everything and on every player's results.

I am really happy that I handled the pressure well, because after the final, everyone was talking about Amanda's stress or something like that, but I was also extremely stressed. Playing the Wimbledon final on Centre Court is a surreal experience," assured Swiatek for Tennis Up To Date.

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

A tennis player's income depends solely on his sporting results. In the event of injury, the daily life of those far from the Top 100 can become extremely complicated.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
