Nadal is very perceptive, almost visionary. At his pre-tournament press conference, the Majorcan declared: "All the matches are difficult for me today, difficult and more unpredictable than before". As it happens, the Spaniard was absolutely right. Opposed to a Zizou Bergs who didn't seem to have any complexes, Nadal came through in almost 3 hours (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Faced with a very aggressive Belgian (28 winners, 19 unforced errors), 'Rafa' struggled to find the key. Despite a good start to the match, the Manacor bull was taken by surprise by his enterprising opponent. Losing 5 of the last 6 games of the first set, the man who has won this tournament ten times in Rome found his back against the wall.

Perhaps still a little disturbed by the change in altitude (between Madrid and Rome), Nadal took a while to really get into his stride. But as the match wore on, he finally got the better of his opponent. Progressively rediscovering his heavy shots and his preferred patterns of play, the 14-time winner in Paris showed great fighting spirit to win in the end. Rafa' thus continues his journey in Italy and will cross swords with an opponent of a completely different calibre in the next round: Hubert Hurkacz (world No. 9).

Despite an uneven match, the Spaniard didn't seem that uncomfortable physically, and surely needs to play a lot of matches to get back into the swing of things. Nevertheless, this 5th victory in three weeks of competition ensures the essential.

You can see how it played out game by game. Go to order of player, tap nadals match, tap the clock symbol and it shows you how each game went and if you tap on any game, it shows you how the points went in that game.

What does it mean "losing 5 of the last 6 games of the first set" in the context of the score in the first set being Rafa v Zizou 4-6 ?

The only math that works is Nadal up 3-1 (4 games out of the total of ten). Nadal wins one more to make a total of 4 and Bergs wins 5 to make a total of 6.
So from 1-3 (4 games)
2-3
3-3
3-4
4-4
5-4
6-4

I guess the author explained it that way to show Nadal pretty much losing most of the end of the set. So all the momentum was in Bergs favor and then ... rain delay. Nadal comes back and wins easily. Would he have won without the rain delay? We'll never know, but I would think yes.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
